Source & License

RTCI is an aggregator: it pulls each agency's numbers from an underlying source. Observations are split by each agency's underlying source type and each origin is attributed on its own, so every place is credited to where the data actually came from rather than to RTCI itself:
FBI UCR, via the Crime Data Explorer (https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/)
a state UCR program
the agency's own records management system
agency-published crime totals
RTCI's own aggregate rows, and any source type it could not classify
Per-agency underlying source URLs are captured for all 727 places, so the app can link a number straight to its real source page.

Methodology & caveats

Trailing-12 series are rolling sums, not monthly values. They must never be summed into an annual total; the December value IS the calendar-year figure.
Per-100k rates use RTCI's FBI-covered population as the denominator; agencies with no population get counts but no rate.
Murder and Theft are RTCI-specific offense keys (local PDs use Homicide / LarcenyTheft with different definitions).
Coverage varies by agency and month; the RTCI sample is ~700 agencies, not all US agencies. Rankings over this data must be scoped to reporting agencies.
The 9 aggregate rows are synthetic sums of contributing agencies (marked as such on their place nodes).
